Planning a wedding can feel like one big list of decisions.
Venue, photographer, band, flowers, dress, suits, food, invitations — and somewhere in the middle of it all, you need to decide who is going to look after the music.
One question I hear regularly is:
How far in advance should you book a wedding DJ? In Ireland,
Popular dates can often book up months or even years ahead, so it’s worth planning your entertainment early.
The short answer is: as soon as you know your wedding date and venue, it’s worth starting the search.
You don’t necessarily need to book your DJ years in advance, but if you have a particular date, DJ or style of entertainment in mind, booking early gives you the best chance of getting exactly what you want.
When Should You Start Looking for a Wedding DJ?
I’d recommend starting your search around 12–18 months before your wedding.
That gives you plenty of time to look at different DJs, read reviews, watch videos, compare packages and find someone who feels like the right fit.
For particularly popular dates, it’s worth looking even earlier.
Saturday weddings during the summer months can be especially sought after, and experienced wedding DJs can have dates booked well in advance.
Do You Really Need to Book That Early?
Not necessarily.
You can absolutely find a great DJ closer to your wedding date, particularly if you’re flexible with your date.
However, there’s a big difference between finding a DJ and getting the DJ you actually want.
If you’ve seen a DJ whose style you love, their reviews are excellent and you like the way they approach weddings, there’s no guarantee they’ll still be available six months from now.
Once their date is booked, it’s booked.
Popular Wedding Dates Can Go Quickly
Not every wedding date is equally difficult to book.
Some dates are naturally more popular than others.
These can include:
- Summer Saturdays
- Bank holiday weekends
- Popular dates in May, June, July and August
- Dates that have a special significance
- Christmas and New Year weddings
If your wedding falls on one of these dates, I’d recommend getting your entertainment booked sooner rather than later.
What If You’re Getting Married on a Friday or Sunday?
Being flexible with your wedding day can sometimes make finding suppliers easier.
Friday and Sunday weddings can still be incredibly popular, but there can be more availability than on peak Saturday dates.
The same applies to weddings outside the traditional summer season.
Autumn and winter weddings can be fantastic, and there are often more options when it comes to supplier availability.
The most important thing is not to assume that a less traditional wedding date automatically means every supplier will be available.
What Should You Look for in a Wedding DJ?
Price is obviously part of the decision, but it shouldn’t be the only thing you consider.
Your wedding DJ is responsible for much more than pressing play on a playlist.

Reviews
See what previous couples say about their experience.
Look for comments about reliability, communication, professionalism and how the DJ handled the wedding itself.
Experience
Ask how many weddings the DJ regularly works at.
Wedding DJing is very different from simply playing music at a party.
A professional wedding DJ needs to understand timings, speeches, first dances, venue requirements and how to read a room.
The Music
Look at the DJ’s style.
Do they play the kind of music you actually enjoy?
Can they adapt to different generations and different types of guests?
Are they happy to work from your requests while still reading the dance floor?
The Setup
You don’t necessarily need to know the model numbers of every speaker and light.
What matters is whether the DJ has a professional, reliable setup that is appropriate for your venue and your wedding.
Reliability
This is a big one.
Your wedding day isn’t something you can simply repeat next weekend if your entertainment doesn’t turn up.
Ask about insurance, backup plans and what happens if something goes wrong.
A professional DJ should have contingencies in place.
What If You’ve Already Booked Your Band?
If you’re having a live wedding band, it’s worth thinking about your DJ at the same time.
A band might finish their set at a particular time, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your evening has to finish.
Having a DJ following the band can keep the dance floor going and provide a seamless transition from live music into the rest of the night.

Don’t Leave Your Music Until the Last Minute
Your wedding music is one of the things your guests will remember.
The songs during the evening, the first dance, the atmosphere on the dance floor and those moments when everyone is singing together can become some of the best memories of the night.
That’s why it’s worth giving yourself plenty of time to find the right DJ.
You don’t need to have every song chosen when you make your booking.
A good DJ should be able to work with you throughout the planning process and help you build the right music for your day.
What Happens After You Book?
Once you’ve secured your DJ, there’s no need to panic about creating the perfect playlist immediately.
Your wedding is still months away.
As the date gets closer, you can start thinking about:
- Your favourite songs
- Your first dance
- Must-play tracks
- Songs you definitely don’t want
- Music for your ceremony
- Drinks reception music
- Wedding meal music
- Evening entertainment
- Special requests
The planning should be enjoyable rather than stressful.
So, When Should You Book Your Wedding DJ?
If you’ve already chosen your wedding date and venue, I’d start looking now.
Around 12–18 months before the wedding is a good starting point, while popular dates can be worth securing even earlier.
If you’re getting married sooner than that, don’t worry.
It’s still worth asking.
Availability changes constantly, and you may find that the DJ you’ve been looking for is available on your date.
The important thing is to avoid leaving it until the last minute if having a particular DJ is important to you.
